Empiricism and Relationism Intertwined: Hume and Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity

Abstract: Einstein acknowledged that his reading of Hume influenced the development of his special theory of relativity. In this article, I juxtapose Hume's philosophy with Einstein's philosophical analysis related to his special relativity. I argue that there are two common points to be found in their writings, namely an empiricist theory of ideas and concepts, and a relationist ontology regarding space and time. The main thesis of this article is that these two points are intertwined in Hume and Einstein. Keywords: Hum… Show more

“…Both substantivalism and relationism lack observational consequences. 17 According to Slavov (2016), the development of special relativity was inspired by relationism. Einstein (1998: 220), in a letter to Schlick (quoted in Slavov 2016: 143), speaks of the influence that Mach's philosophy had on his own work, which is most likely a reference to Mach's relationism.…”

“…Hume and the empiricist tradition did not only shape Einstein's views on the epistemology of concepts. I have argued (Slavov 2016) that there are also analogies between Hume's and Einstein's ontological positions concerning space and time. They are both relationists.…”
