Empirically modelled Pc3 activity based on solar wind parameters

Abstract: Abstract. It is known that under certain solar wind (SW)/interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) conditions (e.g. high SW speed, low cone angle) the occurrence of groundlevel Pc3-4 pulsations is more likely. In this paper we demonstrate that in the event of anomalously low SW particle density, Pc3 activity is extremely low regardless of otherwise favourable SW speed and cone angle. We re-investigate the SW control of Pc3 pulsation activity through a statistical analysis and two empirical models with emphasis on th… Show more

“…Plasma mass density at L ∼ 1.85 was inferred from FLR observations made on both hemispheres, at Nagycenk-Tihany in Hungary and at Hermanus-Southerland in South Africa (Heilig et al 2009a(Heilig et al , 2009b. The resulting density values, as well as, the variation of the density fitted well.…”

“…Therefore, a measure of ground Pc3 wave power could be a useful Pc3 index, characterizing the intensity of upstream turbulence [Heilig et al, 2010]. Additionally, the Pc3 central frequency enables one to determine the IMF magnitude.…”
