Empirical research methods in operations management

Abstract: This paper discusses the need for more research in operations management which is based on data from the real world. Tying operations management theory in with practice has been called for over a long period of time, however, many P/OM researchers do not have a strong foundation in gathering and using empirical data. This paper provides a starting point that encourages operations management researchers to use empirical data and provides a systematic approach for conducting empirical studies. Empirical research… Show more

“…Scale development, or the iterative design and refinement of multi-item scales employed to measure the constructs we are interested in studying, is vital to empirical research in operations management (Adam and Swamidass, 1989;Flynn et al, 1990;Hensley, 1999;Menor, 2000;Stratman and Roth, 2002;Roth and Schroeder, forthcoming). Without reliable and valid measurement scales, we are less capable of empirically estimating the relationships that tie various operational concepts together.…”

“…If 19 per cent of the addresses are considered irrelevant, the total number of relevant companies would be 608 and the response rate 47 per cent. A response rate above 40 per cent is often considered necessary (Flynn et al, 1990), even though much recent empirical research in manufacturing shows lower response rates (e.g. Miller and Roth, 1994;Vickery et al, 1993) Instrument and data analysis The respondents from different industry sectors were grouped according to their size (number of employees).…”

“…The purpose of this approach was to enhance the response rate and improve the quality of data. This approach has been endorsed by other scholars in the literature (Flynn et al, 1990;Forza, 2016;Kang & Bradley, 2002;Finn & Lamb, 1991;Zhao et al, 2002;Dabholkar et al, 2000;Devinder & Datta, 2003;Cunningham & Young, 2002).…”
