Empirical analysis of solid management waste costs: Some evidence from Galicia, Spain

Abstract: This paper analyses the factors that determine solid waste service costs. The empirical analysis is based on information derived from a survey conducted in a sample of Galician municipalities. The results reveal economies of scale in municipalities of fewer than 50,000 inhabitants, such that cooperation between these municipalities could lead to cost savings. It also appears that private delivery is not cheaper than public delivery. Finally, designating a larger proportion of the total waste volume to recyclin… Show more

“…The result is also consistent with some previous observations (Callan and Thomas, 2001;Bel and Fageda, 2010). Furthermore, by comparing the absolute values of the coefficient estimators between the incinerator and recycling of the final decision model, we observed that the impact of the incineration is around twice as great as that of the recycling for the total cost, and 4 times, for the average cost.…”

“…Furthermore, Callan and Thomas (2001) derived an in-depth financial cost modeling system for the MSW service regarding landfilling and recycling. In addition, focusing on the cost-effectiveness of the public-monopoly recycling, Bel and Fageda (2010) also analyzed the cost structure of MSW services in Galicia, Spain by using the multivariate regression approach.…”

“…Empirical literature explaining variables that influence solid waste operating cost dates back to mid-1960s [12]. In econometric modeling of MSW collection systems, there is the need to specify a cost function and a method for estimating the parameters, for e.g.…”

“…The functional forms of the estimation methods include the linear, trans-log and log-linear models. Past studies show that the loglinear and trans-log functional forms have been more popular in modeling the cost of MSW management [12], [14]. Because the trans-log functional form requires a large sample size [15], the log-linear functional form, as presented in (1), was used in the study.…”
