Emphysematous hepatic abscess and pyometra, both caused by Burkholderia cepacia, in a bitch

Abstract: A thirteen‐year‐old female intact mixed dog was presented to the emergency service with a history of vomiting and apathy. The bitch was under treatment of prednisone for chronic cough. The patient was depressed and showed abdominal pain. Abdominal radiographs revealed an increased liver size, a rounded structure of gas opacity located within the liver and a soft tissue opacity mass in the caudal abdomen. The ultrasonographic findings of the abdomen were consistent with emphysematous hepatic abscess (HA), vacuo… Show more

“…23,24 There is a single case report describing an emphysematous hepatic abscess due to the hematogenous spread of bacteria from a uterine infection in a bitch, Burkholderia cepacia being the causative agent. 25 In the present case, the authors consider that the source of infection spreading to the liver could also be hematogenous. However, it is worth highlighting that, in this instance, the liver biopsy likely played a significant role in dissemination.…”

“…Pyometra has been associated with immune system suppression 22 and, although infrequent, hematogenous dissemination of bacteria originating from a uterine infection to distant sites of the body has also been described in dogs and cats 23,24 . “…Moreover, previous case reports only included males; however, patient 2 in this report was female; to our knowledge, this case series describes the first case of a female patient with Bcc undergoing treatment for deep pyoderma. In a recent report, one female dog had an emphysematous hepatic abscess associated with pyometra caused by Bcc ( Carrillo et al , 2021 ). Hence, Bcc infection is not a male-specific condition.…”
