Empatia Em Idosos Como Processo Multifacetado

Abstract

Empathy is the ability to understand, share, and take care the feelings of others. It is a construct that works directly at the cognitive, affective and behavioral levels, and influences in a particular way each phase of the development. In elderly people, empathy is responsible for maintaining networks of support and preservation of a healthy cognition. Cognitive deficits and isolation are the main responsible for low levels of empathy in the elderly people and is the first step for the development of diseases such as depression and dementias. Some alternatives such as the development of social skills and neuropsychological rehabilitation can give the elderly the autonomy necessary to resume part of activities previously performed by them, and thereby strengthen empathy. The presence of support networks is the main ally in the preservation of empathy in the third age. We conclude that empathy is very important in preserving the cognitive reserve and the well-being of the older, and his low levels the entrance door for organic and psychological diseases.
