El presente monográfico, centrado en el aprendizaje-servicio (ApS) en el ámbito de las actividades físico-deportivas (AFD), pone el foco de atención en las desigualdades que todavía existen en el acceso de muchos colectivos vulnerados a la práctica de actividad física y deportiva. El objetivo de este texto inicial es presentar la creación de la “Red de Investigación en Aprendizaje-Servicio en Actividad Física y Deporte para la Inclusión Social” (RIADIS), bajo el amparo del Consejo Superior de Deportes. En el momento de su nacimiento RIADIS acoge a investigadoras e investigadores de diez universidades españolas que integran capacidades y recursos dirigidos hacia la excelencia docente e investigadora con el propósito de dialogar, encontrar respuestas, construir conocimientos y unirse en la búsqueda o creación de soluciones respecto a la AFD como herramienta para la inclusión social, en aras a lograr una sociedad más justa.

Service-learning is a teaching methodology that promotes students’ learning through active participation in experiences of community service. This methodology allows students to engage directly with those to whom it offers a needs- and context-adapted service, very often outside the classroom. While there are numerous projects that follow the service-learning methodology, surveys of experiences carried out at higher education level remain scarce. We performed a survey study with 424 undergraduate students participating in service-learning projects in order to identify the type and level of student participation, the skills and competences acquired; the characteristics of services provided; and the levels of satisfaction of students taking part. We found that the students had a positive perception of the effects of their participation; that the skills and competences developed were primarily teamwork, ethical commitment, adapting to new situations and problem-solving; and that the usefulness of the service was mainly in moral development and commitment.

Rather than considering human potential in terms of an unrealized desired state, what if we framed it as gaining momentum in worthy long-term pursuits? This conceptual article, integrating ideas and findings from several scholarly literatures, explores how life purpose can serve as a meaningful, intentional guide for individuals, especially youth, to direct their other potentials into prosocial contributions to society. The argument (a) considers life purpose itself as a form of intrapersonal giftedness different from academic giftedness; (b) describes how life purpose could include distinctions of further potentials: coherence among purpose dimensions, influence on different life domains, reach of others impacted by the youths’ contributions, emphasis to change society, and precocious emergence of purpose’s dimensions and distinctions; and (c) muses how life purpose’s directing of other potentials might become a potential that could be realized by all youth.
