Emotional Intelligence and Career Decision‐Making Self‐Efficacy: Mediating Roles of Goal Commitment and Professional Commitment

Abstract: This study is the first to examine the mechanism of the relationship between emotional intelligence (EI) and career decision‐making self‐efficacy (CDMSE) and the moderating role of gender in relevant mechanisms. Analyses of 185 Chinese university students showed that EI could influence CDMSE through goal commitment (GC) and professional commitment, and male students exhibited a stronger relationship between EI and GC compared with female students. “…The data were analyzed with two-step approach involving confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM) (e.g., Chen, Aryee, & Lee, 2005;Jiang & Jiang, 2015). Before the structural model was tested, CFA was conducted to examine the measurement model so as to assess whether the study variables were distinguishable from one another.…”

“…Scholars argue that self-evaluation processes extend to individuals' appraisals of environments, leading them to reflect on the fit between the self and the environment (Jiang & Jiang, 2015;Judge et al, 1997). According to prior researchers (Gianakos, 1995;Lent et al, 1994;Savickas, 2002), such environment-related appraisals and reflections assist in forming personal mastery orientation, which guides people's thinking that the career contexts are controllable and manageable, and subsequently develop their positive career perceptions (e.g., CDSE).…”

“…As shown in this table, career adaptability, person-job fit, person-organization fit, and job content plateau were significantly correlated in the expected direction. (Chen et al, 2005;Jiang, 2016), four conditions of mediation proposed by Prussia and Kinicki (1996) were examined to test the hypotheses. The testing procedure of these conditions was in alignment with that put forward by Baron and Kenny (1986), with the fourth condition examined based on model comparison (Prussia & Kinicki, 1996).…”
