Emotional coping is a better predictor of cardiac prognosis than depression and anxiety

Abstract: Objective: We compared, in a prospective study on patients with acute coronary syndrome, the predictive effect of a depression or anxiety diagnosis and of emotion-focused, problem-focused and dysfunctional coping strategies, as detected early after an acute event, on patients' left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), a reliable prognostic index of disease severity, at a three-month follow up.Methods: Ninety consecutive patients following an acute coronary syndrome event (83.3% men; mean age 56.9 ± 8.9 years)… Show more

“…A negative relationship between coping strategy use and psychological distress was reported. Anxious or depressed patients used fewer cognitive, social, emotional, spiritual and physical coping resources, significantly fewer confrontational and optimistic coping strategies, and tended to use negative coping methods more frequently …”

“…According to this model, individuals appraise the nature of an illness in terms of its identity, cause, timeline, consequences and the degree to which it is treatable or manageable by either medical intervention or the individual themselves. Individuals who consider their cardiac condition to be well understood, controllable, symptomatic and to have severe consequences, for example, are most likely to attend cardiac rehabilitation (French et al, 2006). Less positive were findings that illness perceptions explained only 2 per cent of the variance in cardiac patients' exercise and dietary choices (Byrne et al, 2005).…”
