La mia relazione, che ho pensato veramente complementare a quella di Marcello Massenzio, porta sul terreno etnografico delle situazioni in cui si manifesta questa creazione di cultura, che mi sembra essere una creazione continua. Il mio titolo pone al suo centro un'antitesi -monumento/evento -, ed è precisamente questo ossimoro che vorrei schiarire. Vi propongo dunque tre storie di monumenti, nella Francia di fine secolo, tre storie che mi sem brano capaci di far riflettere su un fenomeno che mi interessa molto, cioè il risveglio o il recupero collettivo della monumentalità, in occasioni molto particolari che chiamerò "emozioni patrimoniali", restituendo alla parola "emozione" il senso, un po' dimenticato nel francese attuale (si diceva così nel Settecento) di movimento collettivo, improvviso e acuto. Un'emozione di questo tipo non si può spiegare subito, è una sorta di enigma per l'ordine della società. In altre parole mi interessa qui la conversione inaspettata del monumento in un evento o, per sottolineare il paradosso, della storia immo bile e fredda che il monumento incarna alla storia mobile e calda che rinasce al suo proposito. A mio parere, in queste occasioni si rivela qualcosa della posizione ambigua che la monumentalità occupa nelle nostre società urbane attuali. Robert Musil, il grande romanziere viennese dell'inizio del Novecen to, nelle sue Opere pre-postume, ha scritto un testo breve su come dimentica re una cosa, una persona, un evento: facendone un monumento. Paradossal mente, secondo Musil, i monumenti sono macchine per creare l'oblio. Pre senti sotto lo sguardo, più di ogni altro edificio, sono spesso resi invisibili da questo surplus di presenza. Se ammettiamo questo ragionamento, la questio ne si pone dunque in questi termini: come fare per riallacciare il legame col monumento? E penso qui soprattutto al monumento detto "storico", al mo numento come edificio notabile. La domanda non è retorica, è una domanda ossessionante dell'urbanistica contemporanea, e le risposte sono in pratica poche. Ne tengo in considerazione tre: restituire al monumento una funzio ne quotidiana oppure, al contrario, isolarlo nella sua differenza d'oggetto consacrato da visitare e ammirare, o ancora, e questa è una terza via, giocare un'alternanza di usanze che immerge il monumento in un tempo ritmato, quasi rituale, alla maniera delle chiese, e ci possono essere anche combina zioni di queste soluzioni.
