“…At ages 7 and 11, parents rated children's and adolescents' behavioral and emotional diffi culties using short forms of Rutter et al's (1970) Health and Behavior Checklists (Buchanan et al, 2002;Chase-Lansdale et al, 1995). The measure of externalizing behavior was based on the average scores of six items: whether the parent believes the child has diffi culty in settling to anything for more than a few minutes, destroys own or others' belongings, is squirmy or fi dgety, is irritable and "quick to fl y off the handle," fi ghts with other children, and is disobedient at home (responses to each item included "never," "sometimes," and "frequently").…”

“…The combination of conduct problems and internalizing problems seems to result in the highest risk of subsequent psychiatric disorders, criminal offenses, and self-reported problems at follow-up (Sourander et al 2007). Some investigators have even indicated no association exists between adult anxiety symptoms and internalizing problems in childhood, while people who externalized problems in childhood were nearly twice as likely as those without such problems to have high malaise scores in adulthood (Buchanan et al 2002).…”

“…In the field of developmental psychology, for example, risk and protective factors mediating the path between childhood behavior problems and later negative outcomes is a primary interest (e.g., Buchanan, Flouri, & Brinke, 2002;Ladd & Burgess, 2001;White, Bates, & Buyske, 2001). Research aimed at better understanding causal pathways to childhood behavior problems and extending from childhood behavior problems to subsequent negative outcomes has investigated factors including child maltreatment, parental attachment, and school engagement.…”
