Emotion recognition and processing in patients with mild cognitive impairment: A systematic review

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate emotion recognition and processing in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in order to update the state of current literature on this important but undervalued topic. We identified 15 papers published between 2012 and 2022 that meet the inclusion criteria. Paper search, selection, and extraction followed the PRISMA guidelines. We used a narrative synthesis approach in order to report a summary of the main findings taken from all papers. The results collecte… Show more

“…In comparison to HC and naMCI, participants with aMCI were less accurate in recognizing the emotion of all categories of presented facial stimuli ( McCade et al, 2018 ). The result of poorer performance in emotion recognition among individuals with aMCI has been replicated in another independent study introducing a computer-based emotion recognition test for older adults (HC = 69; AD = 84; and aMCI = 59), where the processing speed score from the Affect-GRADIOR test has been reported to slightly improve the predictive power of the MMSE ( García-Casal et al, 2019 ; for an excellent review on emotion recognition and processing in MCI patients refer to Morellini et al, 2022 ).…”

“…For instance, individuals with AD display impaired identification of negative facial emotions, inconsistent emotional memory benefit ( Brueckner and Moritz, 2009 ; Klein-Koerkamp et al, 2012 ; Mistridis et al, 2013 ; Cárdenas et al, 2021 ), and inconsistent positivity effect ( Goodkind et al, 2015 ; Zhang et al, 2015 ). People with MCI exhibit impaired negative emotion recognition in people with MCI ( Elferink et al, 2015 ; Morellini et al, 2022 ); and those with SCD show altered facial emotion processing( Perez et al, 2022 ) and emotion dysregulation ( Mah et al, 2021 ). Further, anxiety represents a risk factor of cognitive decline in the elderly ( Pietrzak et al, 2012 ; Santabárbara et al, 2020 ; Gracia-García et al, 2023 ).…”

“…prevalence in MCI as past literature have suggested that these impairments are correlated with isolation, difficulties in interpersonal relationships, higher levels of depression (Chiu et al, 2006;Liu et al, 2022), and psychological and behavior disturbances (Shimokawa et al, 2001). However, these associations remain unclear as a recent systematic review found conflicts between the literature -some studies reported emotion-specific impairments in MCI individuals, whilst others did not find any differences between MCI and normal controls (Morellini et al, 2022).…”
