Emotion expressions shape human social norms and reputations

Abstract: Summary The emergence of pro-social behaviors remains a key open challenge across disciplines. In this context, there is growing evidence that expressing emotions may foster human cooperation. However, it remains unclear how emotions shape individual choices and interact with other cooperation mechanisms. Here, we provide a comprehensive experimental analysis of the interplay of emotion expressions with two important mechanisms: direct and indirect reciprocity. We show that cooperation in an iterate… Show more

“…However, it is worth noting that future studies could explore the incorporation of reinforcement learning methods, as outlined in studies such as [44,45], to leverage the past experiences of bots and develop more sophisticated strategies. Additionally, relaxing the strict anonymity of the game scenario while still focusing on the one-shot game scenario by allowing the presence of information sources, such as reputation [42], prior commitment [46], emotion [47] and intention [48,49], would provide a more realistic and nuanced understanding of the role of bots in promoting cooperation.…”

“…Cooperation with artificial agents depends on trust and transparency (Han, Perret, & Powers 2021;Ishowo-Oloko et al 2019). In the short term, experiments in environments where humans interact with robotic partners and virtual agents can reveal whether humans' reciprocal behaviors are such that we can expect cooperation stability (Santos et al 2020;de Melo, Santos, & Terada 2023).…”
