Emollient efficacy and acceptability in the treatment of eczematous dry skin: A double-blind, randomised comparison of two UK-marketed products

Abstract: Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the moisturising efficacy and acceptability of physical characteristics of two commonly prescribed emollients licenced in the UK, Doublebase Dayleve gel (DELP) and Diprobase cream (DIPC). “…However, some research suggests that emollients that are ostensibly identical in their major constituents can still be experienced as different by the user. [19][20][21] Also, it cannot be assumed that the findings apply to non-study emollients. Missing electronic medical record data and the pragmatic nature of our design, in which the prescription was issued via the participant's general practitioner and usual pharmacy, meant that we were unable to confirm for some participants (29 [5%]) which emollients they initially received, and that nine (2%) participants received an emollient of the correct type but that was not study approved.…”

“…In recent years, moisturizers account for the largest and important skin care product categories and are found to be beneficial in the management of dry skin associated with AD, psoriasis and ichthyosis. 3,4 Multiple guidelines recommend to apply moisturizer generously and frequently in order to maintain the hydration within the stratum corneum, thereby keeping the corneocytes "fluffed up" and closing the cracks leading to restoration of natural barrier function of the skin. 9 In our study, we evaluated real world effectiveness of MaxRich®; an intense moisturizer in the management of dry skin disorders like AD, psoriasis and ichthyosis.…”

“…A sample size of 14 subjects was calculated to give 90% power to detect a difference in mean AUC of 524 between DELP and ZBC, using a 5% significance level. This difference in mean AUC was based on the results from a similar previous study [ 11 ]. Up to 20 subjects were therefore planned in order to allow for possible dropouts.…”
