Emmetropia Is Maintained Despite Continued Eye Growth From 16 to 18 Years of Age

Abstract: PURPOSE. To examine, in Norwegian adolescents, to what degree emmetropia and low hyperopia were maintained from 16 to 18 years of age, and if this was the case, whether it was associated with continued coordinated ocular growth.METHODS. Cycloplegic autorefraction and ocular biometry, including crystalline lens thickness, were measured in 93 Norwegian adolescents (mean age: 16.7 6 0.3 years; 63.4% females) and repeated after 2 years. Crystalline lens power was determined by ray tracing over a 1-mm pupil, based … Show more

“…Most children were hyperopic, supporting findings from other Nordic studies. Together with the increasing amount of daily near work such as screen work, this study highlights and supports the importance of regular eye examinations to prevent unnecessary symptoms and difficulties [7][8][9]48,90 . Importantly, this study shows that many school children, parents and teachers are unaware of symptoms of vision problems that may influence academic performance and quality of life 30,48 .…”

“…Children with at least one myopic parent were over six times more likely to be classified within the Emerging Myopes refractive group compared to the Persistent Emmetropes group (OR = 6.28 [95% CI 1.01 to 38.93]). Meta-analysis by Zhang et al 37 report a significant positive association between parental myopia and a child’s risk of developing myopia, however they report a lower odds ratio of 1.53 (95% CI 1.21–1.85) when one parent had myopia and 2.19 (95% CI 1.42–2.77) when two parents were myopic. Individual studies within this meta-analysis have a range of odds ratios for risk of myopia development from 1.48 to 7.90.…”

“…The lens is an avascular tissue located in the anterior chamber of the eye that grows throughout the life of the individual. Its physiological role is to refract light onto the retina and this function must be maintained initially as the eye develops, but then adapt to different growth requirements as the eye ages 1 4 . For mammals, the postnatal period of development is where the most accelerated growth phase takes place and when the growth of the different tissues of the eye is integrated to deliver the required visual properties 5 .…”
