A likely explanation for these negative observations is that whilst these compounds have been identi®ed as precursors and as intermediates in the formation of PCDDs and PCDFs in combustion systems (Gullett et al 1990;Stieglitz et al 1991) and are therefore good candidates as surrogates for PCDDs and PCDFs by virtue of this mechanistic link, they can also be formed as products of incomplete combustion in their own right, under conditions that are not necessarily correlated with or optimum for PCDD/F formation.…”
