Emission Reduction Performance of Modified Hot Mix Asphalt Mixtures

Abstract: Three novel asphalt modifiers with pollutant emission reduction effects and new emissions measurement equipment compatible with several preexisting asphalt production systems are developed in this paper. The effects of various modifier, asphalt binder type, and gradation of hot mix asphalt (HMA) on pollutant emissions are evaluated in the lab through a comprehensive experimental design. Furthermore, road performances are monitored to evaluate the emissions reduction of modified HMA mixture for production. With… Show more

“…Asphalt is a vital part of flexible pavement design. However, it is also detrimental to the environment and human health in many ways, including through its smoke emission [ [194] , [195] , [196] ] and its utilization of nonrenewable resources [ 58 ]. Asphalt, also known as bitumen, is a form of petroleum, a nonrenewable resource.…”

“…The mixing temperature for binders is usually chosen by a pavement engineer based on the specific "viscosity" and gradation of the HMA. The pollutant emissions are evaluated in a lab by applying a comprehensive experimental design [26]. As the HMA manufacturers are required to meet the airborne emission thresholds, it is essential to define ways to measure those emissions.…”

“…Gussasphalt (GA) is widely employed in the construction of steel bridge deck pavement due to its ability to form via selfflow without compaction, its high compactness after forming, water resistance, and good compatibility with steel deck plate deformation [1][2][3][4]. e wide application of GA in cold areas motivates the development of methods for evaluating its low-temperature performance [5][6][7].…”
