[1] An extensive set of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particulate organic matter (POM) was measured in polluted air during the New England Air Quality Study in 2002. Using VOC ratios, the photochemical age of the sampled air masses was estimated. This approach was validated (1) by comparing the observed rates at which VOCs were removed from the atmosphere with the rates expected from OH oxidation, (2) by comparing the VOC emission ratios inferred from the data with the average composition of urban air, and (3) by the ability to describe the increase of an alkyl nitrate with time in terms of the chemical kinetics. A large part of the variability observed for oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs) and POM could be explained by a description that includes the removal of the primary anthropogenic emissions, the formation and removal of secondary anthropogenic species, and a biogenic contribution parameterized by the emissions of isoprene. The OVOC sources determined from the data are compared with the available literature, and a satisfactory agreement is obtained. The observed sub-mm POM was highly correlated with secondary anthropogenic gas-phase species, strongly suggesting that the POM was from secondary anthropogenic sources. The results are used to describe the speciation and total mass of gas-and particle-phase organic carbon as a function of the photochemical age of an urban air mass. Shortly after emission the organic carbon mass is dominated by primary VOCs, while after two days the dominant contribution is from OVOCs and sub-mm POM. The total measured organic carbon mass decreased by about 40% over the course of two days. The increase in sub-mm POM could not be explained by the removal of aromatic precursors alone, suggesting that other species must have contributed and/or that the mechanism for POM formation is more efficient than previously assumed.Citation: de Gouw, J. Abstract. The nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) exchange between the atmosphere and needles of Picea abies L. (Norway Spruce) was studied under uncontrolled field conditions using a dynamic chamber system. This system allows measurements of the flux density of the reactive NO-NO 2 -O 3 triad and additionally of the non-reactive trace gases CO 2 and H 2 O. For the NO 2 detection a highly NO 2 specific blue light converter was used, which was coupled to chemiluminescence detection of the photolysis product NO. This NO 2 converter excludes known interferences with other nitrogen compounds, which occur by using more unspecific NO 2 converters. Photo-chemical reactions of NO, NO 2 , and O 3 inside the dynamic chamber were considered for the determination of NO 2 flux densities, NO 2 deposition velocities, as well as NO 2 compensation point concentrations. The calculations are based on a bi-variate weighted linear regression analysis (y-and x-errors considered). The NO 2 deposition velocities for spruce, based on projected needle area, ranged between 0.07 and 0.42 mm s −1 . The calculated NO 2 compensation point concentrations ranged from 2.4 ± 9.63 to 29.0 ± 16.30 nmol m −3 (0.05-0.65 ppb) but the compensation point concentrations were all not significant in terms of compensation point concentration is unequal to zero. These data challenge the existence of a NO 2 compensation point concentration for spruce. Our study resulted in lower values of NO 2 gas exchange flux densities, NO 2 deposition velocities and NO 2 compensation point concentrations in comparison to most previous studies. It is essential to use a more specific NO 2 analyzer than used in previous studies and to consider photo-chemical reactions between NO, NO 2 , and O 3 inside the chamber.

According to recent assessments, tropical woodlands contribute about half of all global natural non-methane volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. Large uncertainties exist especially about #uxes of compounds other than isoprene and monoterpenes. During the Large-Scale Biosphere/Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia } Cooperative LBA Airborne Regional Experiment 1998 (LBA-CLAIRE-98) campaign, we measured the atmospheric mixing ratios of di!erent species of VOC at a ground station at Balbina, Amazonia. The station was located 100 km north of Manaus, SE of the Balbina reservoir, with 200}1000 km of pristine forest in the prevailing wind directions. Sampling methods included DNPH-coated cartridges for carbonyls and cartridges "lled with graphitic carbons of di!erent surface characteristics for other VOCs. The most prominent VOC species present in air were formaldehyde and isoprene, each up to several ppb. Concentrations of methylvinyl ketone as well as methacroleine, both oxidation products of isoprene, were relatively low, indicating a very low oxidation capacity in the lower atmospheric boundary layer, which is in agreement with a daily ozone maximum of (20 ppb. Total monoterpene concentration was below 1 ppb. We detected only very low amounts of VOC species, such as benzene, deriving exclusively from anthropogenic sources.
