Emission of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from the liquid injection incineration of petrochemical industrial wastewater

The chemical mass balance model was applied to estimate the major sources of atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) at an Industrial Region in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The gaseous and particulate phases of 16 individual compounds were analyzed between March 2012 and August 2012. The mean total concentrations and total BaP eq were higher during the cold season and lower during the warm summer, with gaseous PAHs predominant at all sites. Low weight-PAHs and median weight-PAHs were found predominantly in the gaseous phase, while high weight-PAHs were predominant in the particle phase. Results from the receptor model revealed that the average contributions were 38.2%, 27.2%, 20.7%, 6.8%, 5.2%, and 2.0% from vehicles, heavy oil combustion, natural gas combustion, incinerator, tetrabromobisphenol A production, and diesel combustion at the seven receptors, respectively. Vehicle emissions appear to be the significant source of PAHs in the investigated area, although other industrial sources, as described above, also have an impact on the total PAHs.

Source Identification of VOCs in a Petrochemical Complex by Applying Open-Path Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry

The petrochemical complex examined in this work includes a great variety of facilities and factories that emit various odorants. A stationary open-path Fourier transform infrared (OPFTIR) system can be used for routine VOC and odor monitoring. However, when odor episodes occur, only multiple mobile OPFTIR systems are able to identify the odorant sources effectively and efficiently. In this study, N,N-dimethyl formamide (DMF) was found to be the most commonly detected odorant emitted from the investigated petrochemical complex by routine monitoring of a stationary OPFTIR system. Then the sequential deployments of a pair of mobile OPFTIR systems were carried out both upwind and downwind of the different sections of the focal area. The pollution rose plots derived from the data obtained by the pair of mobile OPFTIR systems identified the DMF sources. By conducting correlation analyses on the data obtained from the mobile OPFTIR situated at the downwind location of the DMF emission sources, we found that besides DMF, the dry PU synthetic leather process of plant B was also the major odorant source of 2-butanone, ethyl acetate and isopropanol. The source identification measure developed in this study can be used to clarify possible odorant sources not only for petrochemical industrial complexes but also for other areas associated with various emission sources.

Effects of Selective Catalytic Reduction on the Emissions of Persistent Organic Pollutants from a Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine

The emissions of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) from diesel engines is becoming more important due to their proximity to human beings compared to stationary sources whose emission have been well controlled over the years. The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) have been adopted in the heavy-duty diesel engine (HDDE) to reduce the nitrogen oxide (NO x ). SCR has also been reported to reduce the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). However, the memory effect and reformation of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) during SCR operation are not well understood. This study investigated the effect of Copper-zeolite SCR (CuZ SCR) on PCDD/F, PCB, polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxin and dibenzofuran (PBDD/F), and polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) emissions from a HDDE at 50% and 75% engine load. Notably, PCDD/F and PCB toxicity emissions increased by 78.4% and 201%, respectively. The dominant PCDD/F congeners were OCDD, OCDF, 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDD, and 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDF and PCB-105, PCB-118 and PCB-77 for PCBs. More PCDFs were formed compared to PCDDs and lower chlorinated congeners increased more than the higher chlorinated ones. There was also an increase of PBDD/F concentrations from undetectable levels (ND) to 0.247 pg TEQ Nm -3 (4.00 pg TEQ L -1 ) after the SCR. However, only 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpBDF and OBDF contributed to the concentrations. PBBs was the only compound measured that reduced after the SCR. The only congener detected before and after the SCR was PBB 15. Consequently, the CuZ SCR could be a source of POPs under mid and high engine loads in this study. Further detail research is required to focus on the formation of POPs on the catalyst surfaces and structures.
