EMF Study of the Liquid Sb-Sn-Zn Alloys

Abstract: The measurement of electromotive force (EMF) of concentration cells was applied to obtain zinc activity in ternary liquid Sb-Sn-Zn alloys in a Zn liq |(KCl-LiCl) eut + ZnCl 2 |(Sb-Sn-Zn) liq galvanic cell. The measurements were carried out at temperatures from 723 up to 943 K for different Zn concentrations X Zn and for five constant ratios of Sn to Sb mole fractions, which were 1/3, 1, 3, 4 and 9. It was found out, that with increasing Sn concentration in the ternary alloys, the activity of Zn grew reaching t… Show more

“…25 The observed ternary alloys showed positive deviation from the ideal molar volume. A similar effect was observed for the activity of Zn ternary alloys: 22 over the whole range, there were positive deviations. However, for the alloys with X Sn /X Sb ratio of 1, the variations were very small and increased with increasing Sn content in the alloy.…”

“…The works dealt with the phase diagram of the Sb-Sn-Zn system, [10] structure of Sb 2 SnZn intermetallic phase [11] and metal activities in ternary liquid. [12] Some older sources [10,13,14] reported studies of the Sb-Sn-Zn system on account of the use of the ternary intermetallic phase Sb 2 SnZn as a semiconductor. An important milestone of material research of alloys was the CALPHAD method developed in 1975 [15] which was further developed (extended-generalized-adopted) for alloys.…”

“…The RoHS directive banned the use of Pb in solder joints, and every few years expands to another group of materials, including materials for the supervision and control, and medical devices. Numerous lead-free solders studies have been conducted in recent years (Ref [1][2][3][4][5], and focused on the solders with a melting point below 473 K, which can replace low-melting eutectic Sn-37Pb (wt.%). As a Pb-free replacement, Sn-based alloys such as: Sn-Ag-Cu and Sn-Zn, which have properties similar to the Pb-Sn eutectic alloy, have been proposed.…”
