Emerging Viral Infections of the Central Nervous System

Abstract: n this 2-part review, I will focus on emerging virus infections of the central nervous system (CNS). Part 1 will introduce the basic features of emerging infections, including their definition, epidemiology, and the frequency of CNS involvement. Important mechanisms of emergence will be reviewed, including viruses spreading into new host ranges as exemplified by West Nile virus (WNV), Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus, Toscana virus, and enterovirus 71 (EV71). Emerging infections also result from opportunistic … Show more

“…These diseases can severely affect human health and can be associated with long-term sequelae. In addition, new neurotropic viruses are continually emerging and can challenge the nervous system in new ways 5,6 (BOX 1). Emerging viruses are particularly problematic because they are often less equilibrated with their new host, and they can spread rapidly and induce severe pathology.…”

“…Recently, West Nile virus (WNV) spread into humans living in North America, resulting in the development of encephalitis, meningitis and acute flaccid paralysis in a portion of the infected population 6 . Although the exact route by which WNV first entered humans is unknown, it is considered likely that migratory birds (which serve as the normal host reservoir) and mosquito vectors participated in its dissemination.…”

“…Lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) is a bisegmented ssRNA virus belonging to the Arenaviridae and is considered an emerging human pathogen (13). Human transmission has been shown to occur in utero, upon transplantation with infected organs, or upon contact with infected laboratory and wild animals.…”

“…Lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV), a bisegmented ssRNA virus belonging to the Arenaviridae family, is considered an emerging human pathogen (Tyler, 2009). LCMV infection in its natural host, i.e., the mouse, is a widely studied model for virus host interactions that has contributed to the understanding of immune tolerance, immunodominance, MHC restriction, viral-immune interactions and the basis for viral persistence (Buchmeier et al, 1980;Kang and McGavern, 2008).…”
