Emerging Tickborne Bacteria in Cattle from Colombia

Abstract: Ehrlichia minasensis is a new pathogenic bacterial species that infects cattle, and Borrelia theileri causes bovine borreliosis. We detected E. minasensis and B. theileri DNA in cattle from southwestern Colombia by using PCR. E. minasensis and B. theileri should be considered potential etiologies of febrile syndrome in cattle from Colombia.

“…The ML reconstruction is congruent with previous reported phylogenetic inferences [37,40,52,80,83]. In particular, the Borrelia sequences recorded from bats in the present study are closely related to genospecies isolated from Carollia perspicillata in the Department of Santander, Colombia [40].…”

“…In addition, Borrelia spp. infection has been reported in humans in the Andean, Caribbean, and Pacific regions of the departments of Antioquia, Chocó, Córdoba, and Valle del Cauca [46][47][48][49][50], as well as in domestic animals in the departments of Antioquia and Cauca [51,52]. In Colombian wildlife, the presence of spirochetes has been reported in bats roosting at the Macaregua cave in the Department of…”

“…These two Borrelia goat sequences were deposited in the GenBank under accession numbers OP703387 and OP703388. The sequences aligned closely with those reported from Colombia [ 43 ], Thailand [ 44 ], and Zambia [ 13 ]. The 16S rRNA gene is known for its poor discriminatory power.…”

“…reported in humans from Tanzania [ 17 ]. Conversely, the flagellin and 16S rRNA Borrelia sequences from the Nigerian goats showed close similarity with the B. theileri reported in cattle from Zambia [ 13 ] and Columbia [ 43 ], as well as in Ixodid ticks from Thailand [ 44 ] ( Figure 8 and Figure 9 ).…”

“…Ehrlichia minasensis is a novel pathogen causing fever, lethargy, thrombocytopenia and depression in bovines [ 63 ]. It was first identified in cattle from Canada [ 64 ] and later in Brazil [ 65 ] and Colombia [ 66 ]. Besides the American continent, it has also been detected in France [ 65 ], Ethiopia [ 67 ], South Africa [ 68 ], Pakistan [ 69 ] and Israel [ 70 ].…”
