Resumo: A literatura com foco na exclusão vivenciada pelas pessoas com defi ciência apresenta três tipos de barreiras sociais: barreiras de fazer, barreiras de ser e barreiras de falar. Partindo-se dessas pesquisas, o artigo tem como objetivo identifi car e explorar as diferentes facetas da "barreira do ter" para os consumidores com Síndrome de Down. A escolha de focar o estudo em pessoas com a referida síndrome deveu-se principalmente a dois aspectos: (1) os defi cientes mentais não costumam ter espaço nas discussões da academia de administração e(2) dentre as defi ciências mentais, a Síndrome de Down apresenta características fenotípicas que fazem como que sua condição seja visível, o que reforça o estigma da defi ciência. Foram realizadas observações participantes e entrevistas em profundidade com 18 pessoas com Síndrome de Down e suas famílias. As principais facetas da barreira do ter identifi cadas e exploradas foram a falta de acessibilidade nos ambientes de compras, a exclusão do mercado de trabalho, a relação distanciada do dinheiro, os problemas de mobilidade urbana, a difi culdade de acesso à educação formal e a representação do defi ciente na mídia. A barreira do ter para as pessoas com Síndrome de Down pode ser caracterizada como predominantemente atitudinal e são os mais diferentes atores sociais que contribuem para reforçá-la.Palavras-Chave: Barreira do Ter; Síndrome de Down; Exclusão Social; Marketing. Barrier of having and people with Down Syndrome: the role of marketing in social exclusionAbstract: The literature focusing on exclusion experienced by people with disabilities presents three types of social barriers: barriers to doing, barriers to being and barriers to speak. Starting from this research, the article aims to identify and explore how diff erent facets of the "barrier of having" for consumers with Down Syndrome. The choice of focusing the study on people with a conduction syndrome should mainly: (1) the mentally handicapped do not usually have room in the discussions of the academy of administration; (2) among mental defi ciencies, Down syndrome presents phenotypic characteristics that make their condition visible, which reinforce the stigma of the defi ciency. Participants were observed and in-depth interviews were conducted with 18 people with Down syndrome and their families. The main facets of the barrier identifi ed and exploited were: lack of accessibility in the purchasing environment, exclusion from the labor market, distance from money, problems of urban mobility, diffi culty accessing formal education and a representation of media consumption. The barrier of having to people with Down Syndrome can be characterized as predominantly attitudinal and are the most diff erent social actors that contribute to reinforce it.

The potential for everyday soundscapes to evoke diverse emotions amongst different cultural and acoustic communities is increasingly recognised within the literature. However, few studies have examined how these soundscapes can shift with the onset and progression of specific hearing impairments. This paper explores such shifts, drawing on a series of in--depth narrative interviews conducted in the south west of England with individuals diagnosed with Ménière's disease; a long--term progressive vestibular disorder characterised by episodes of vertigo, tinnitus, sensorineural hearing loss and, for some people, hyperacusis (high sensitivity to sudden irregular sounds). Located in the subfield of 'emotional geographies', the paper discusses how participants were forced to connect with and attune to previously unremarkable aspects of their everyday soundscapes in ways that were both emotionally and socially challenging. Four aspects of participants' embodied, emotional soundscapes are critically explored: hearing life in '2D'; corporeal and environmental 'sonic intruders'; corporeal sound 'symbols'; and seeking to regain a semblance of control through soundscape (re)--negotiations. Such insights are important to inform conscious acoustic design efforts that respect the 'ears and voice' of people living with varying levels of auditory sensitivity, rather than urban and community planning policies that continue to prioritise vision and transit.
