Emerging roles of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of pseudoexfoliation syndrome (Review)

Abstract: Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEXS) is a systemic disease caused by defects in the extracellular matrix (ECM) remodelling process leading to the chronic deposition of extracellular, fibrillary, white flaky pseudoexfoliation material (PEXM) throughout the body. Specifically, PEXM deposits on the lens capsule cause open-angle glaucoma, cataracts and blindness in patients with PEXS. Several gene single nucleotide polymorphisms are linked to the development of PEXS in humans, including lysyl oxidase-like 1 gene, clu… Show more

“…In addition, cataract is a common complication of uveitis and may be caused by inflammation [ 16 , 19 , 20 ]. Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEXS) is a disorder characterized by the chronic build-up of white flaky material called pseudoexfoliation material (PEXM) in the extracellular matrix (ECM) throughout the body [ 21 ]. It has been studied that the formation of PEXS is linked to oxidative stress and inflammation [ 22 ].…”

“…Each is a defined clinical entity with the specific genes involved distinctly. PEXS is a systemic disease caused by defects in the extracellular matrix (ECM) [95]. The production and progressive accumulation of abnormal fibrillar extracellular material in ocular and extra tissues characterize it.…”

“…The production and progressive accumulation of abnormal fibrillar extracellular material in ocular and extra tissues characterize it. Recent studies described that defective ECM remodelling and oxidative stress had been hypothesized as significant events leading to PEXS [95]. The link between OS and PEXS was investigated.…”

“…The fibrillar material, possibly the proteoglycan/glycoprotein complex, has an undetermined composition [ 6 ]. Ischemia, hypoxia, oxidative stress, and chronic inflammation are additional pathogenic factors [ 5 , 7 , 8 ]. However, whether the accumulation of pseudoexfoliative material results from excessive production or inefficient degradation has not been determined.…”
