Emerging Role of MicroRNAs and Long Noncoding RNAs in Respiratory Disease

Abstract: The advent of techniques such as microarrays and high-throughput sequencing has revolutionized our ability to examine messenger RNA (mRNA) expression within the respiratory system. Importantly, these approaches have also uncovered the widespread expression of "noncoding RNAs," including microRNAs and long noncoding RNAs, which impact biologic responses through the regulation of mRNA transcription and/or translation. To date, most studies of the role of noncoding RNAs have focused on microRNAs, which regulate m… Show more

“…More than 200 miRNAs have been found to associate with asthma [18]. miR-1, miR-21, miR-126, miR-145 and miR-221 that have potential roles in the development of asthma through the targeting of various cytokines and transcription factors [19]. For asthma, microbiota investigation found that the bronchial tree contained a characteristic flora that was disturbed by the presence of pathogens such as Haemophilus influenzae [20].…”

“…Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are now implicated in various diseases (Booton & Lindsay, 2014;Maass, Luft, & Bahring, 2014;Reddy et al, 2014) including HCC (Takahashi, Yan, Wood, Haga, & Patel, 2014). However, the contributions of lncRNAs to HBV-related HCC remain to be elucidated fully.…”
