Emerging Role of MicroRNA-200 Family in Dentistry

Abstract: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are endogenous non-coding RNAs ~22 nucleotides in length, which have been shown to participate in various biological processes. As one of the most researched miRNAs, the miR-200 family has been found to regulate several factors that are associated with the epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) and cancer stem cells (CSCs) behavior. In this review, we briefly summarize the background of the miR-200 family and their implication in various dental diseases. We focus on the expression change… Show more

“…Emerging evidence has suggested the significance of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) in the regulation of cancer stemness of oral cancer, including both long ncRNAs (lncRNAs; >200 nucleotides) and microRNAs (miRNAs; ∼22 nucleotides). 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 To date, various modes of lncRNA action have been discovered. Aside from their roles in transcription regulation and nuclear organization, lncRNAs mainly exhibit their ability to establish interactions with proteins and nucleic acids and act as post-transcriptional, translational, and post-translational regulators.…”

“…MicroRNAs (miRs) are small non-coding RNAs that play crucial roles in OSCC initiation and progression via epigenetically regulating cellular biological processes (Aali et al 2020;Emfietzoglou et al 2020;Manzano-Moreno et al 2021;Momen-Heravi and Bala 2018;Troiano et al 2018;Yoshizawa and Wong 2013). miR-200 family members are highly involved in OSCC (Arunkumar et al 2018;Hsieh et al 2021;Kim et al 2019). Specifically, the levels of miR-200c in OSCC tumor tissues and the circulating exosomes are significantly less than in adjacent normal tissues (Song et al 2020).…”

Notably, the level of miR-200c in OSCC tumor tissues is significantly less than in adjacent normal tissues, and this downregulation is associated with a poorer prognosis in OSCC treatment (Song et al 2020; Aghiorghiesei et al 2022).…”
