Emerging role of hydrogen sulfide in hypertension and related cardiovascular diseases

Abstract: Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has traditionally been viewed as a highly toxic gas; however, recent studies have implicated H2S as a third member of the gasotransmitter family, exhibiting properties similar to NO and carbon monoxide. Accumulating evidence has suggested that H2S influences a wide range of physiological and pathological processes, among which blood vessel relaxation, cardioprotection and atherosclerosis have been particularly studied. In the cardiovascular system, H2S production is predominantly catalyz… Show more

“…Deregulation of either H 2 S production and/or its downstream actions have been implicated in the pathophysiology of several diseases, including cardiovascular disease, shock, inflammation, diabetes, metabolic syndromes and neurodegeneration4567891011. In connection with cancer, we have previously showed a marked increase in the expression of CBS in colorectal cancer cells (compared to the surrounding normal mucosal margin), which was also recapitulated in multiple colon cancer cell lines12.…”

“…H 2 S has recently emerged as the fourth physiologically important gas that mediates multiple processes in mammalian systems including hypertension, atherosclerosis, heart failure, diabetes, inflammation, neurodegenerative diseases and asthma [120126]. H 2 S can be produced in the human body by resident microbes [127] or by dedicated enzymatic machinery consisting of three independent enzymes, cystathionine β-synthase (CBS), cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE) and 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase β-MST) along with cysteine aminotransferase (CAT) [128] (Fig.…”

“…Considered a toxic gas, H 2 S has emerged as an important signaling molecule, a gas transmittor, influencing physiological and pathological processes (95)(96)(97). Its pleiotropic effect has been reported in inflammation, neuromodulation, and apoptosis (98).…”
