“…Based on the number of cases reported and duration over which these subtypes have been isolated, H5N1 [113][114][115] and H7N9 113,114,[116][117][118] are the most likely viruses to cause a new worldwide pandemic. Most human cases of A(H5N1) and A(H7N9) infection have been associated with direct or indirect contact with infected live or dead poultry.…”

“…The list of the top ten includes the new viral zoonotic pathogen of humans, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus (MERSCoV) (13,14), which was first isolated from a patient who died of a severe respiratory illness in a hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in June 2012 (15). The emergence of MERS-CoV in 2012 (15) was the second time (after SARS-CoV) (16) that a highly pathogenic coronavirus of humans emerged in the 21st century (17). A strong link between human cases of MERS-CoV and dromedary camels has been established through several studies (18)(19)(20)(21)(22)(23)(24)(25)(26).…”

“…Respiratory and gastrointestinal tract bacterial and viral infections spread rapidly and affect almost all pilgrims during Hajj. [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] Respiratory tract infections -whose spread through coughing and sneezing is exacerbated by the crowded Hajj conditions -include community-acquired pneumonia, influenza, and tuberculosis (TB). While bacterial and viral pneumonia are well-documented causes of hospital admission in pilgrims, 13 quantifying the increase in risk of TB transmission is more challenging owing to the longer time period between infection and the development of symptoms.…”
