Emerging issues in the evolution of animal nuptial gifts

Abstract: Uniquely positioned at the intersection of sexual selection, nutritional ecology and life-history theory, nuptial gifts are widespread and diverse. Despite extensive empirical study, we still have only a rudimentary understanding of gift evolution because we lack a unified conceptual framework for considering these traits. In this opinion piece, we tackle several issues that we believe have substantively hindered progress in this area. Here, we: (i) present a comprehensive definition and classification scheme … Show more

“…Nuptial gifts are a widespread reproductive strategy (Vahed 1998(Vahed , 2007Lewis and South 2012) and may be defined as "(…) materials (beyond the obligatory gametes) provided by a donor to a recipient during courtship or copulation in order to improve donor fitness" (Lewis et al 2014). Given this loose definition, some cases traditionally interpreted under different theoretical rationale may be included as a nuptial gift as well.…”

“…The model uses treatment contrasts to compare categories; the reference levels are Empis aestiva and mated flies (see Schielzeth, 2010). For example, we cannot rule out the possibility that females may receive nutrition or simulants other than prey item nuptial gifts from mating, as is common in other insect species, which may also influence the development of eggs (Lewis et al, 2014). for mates.…”

“…One also has to keep in mind that the “what you give is what you get” principle might restrict the extremes that can be taken: For example, targeting accessory gland proteins to an existing reproductive pathway, which can develop resistance to such accessory gland proteins, might actually undermine the efficiency of hermaphroditic reproduction via an insensitivity to one's own regulatory substances (Koene, ). Along the same lines, the donation of a beneficial substance to the partner in the form of a nuptial gift is unlikely, given that such a gift could end up being exchanged, leading to no net gain nor guarantee of it being invested into egg production (see also Lewis et al, ; Schärer et al, ; Lodi and Koene, unpublished).…”
