EmergingAeromonasSpecies Infections and Their Significance in Public Health

Abstract: Aeromonas species are ubiquitous bacteria in terrestrial and aquatic milieus. They are becoming renowned as enteric pathogens of serious public health concern as they acquire a number of virulence determinants that are linked with human diseases, such as gastroenteritis, soft-tissue, muscle infections, septicemia, and skin diseases. Proper sanitary procedures are essential in the prevention of the spread of Aeromonas infections. Oral fluid electrolyte substitution is employed in the prevention of dehydration, … Show more

“…Of particular concern is A. veronii as the most frequent aeromonad isolated in summer, having a wide environmental host range, and being pathogenic to humans (Martin-Carnahan and Joseph, 2005). Patients with underlying medical conditions and immunocompromised hosts are more likely to succumb to Aeromonas infections, therefore a thorough history of occupational and recreational exposure is crucial for clinicians in order to provide the appropriate management (Igbinosa et al, 2012).…”

“…Resistance is particularly relevant in the pathogenic species of Aeromonas spp. in which multidrug resistance have been identified (ALCAIDE et al, 2010;MARTINELI et al, 2010;JANDA & ABBOTT, 2010;IGBINOSA et al, 2012). However, little is known about foodborne and environmental strains, especially in Brazil.…”
