PREMISE Shifting phenology in response to climate is one mechanism that can promote population persistence and geographic spread; therefore, species with limited ability to phenologically track changing environmental conditions may be more susceptible to population declines. Alternatively, apparently nonresponding species may demonstrate divergent responses to multiple environmental conditions experienced across seasons. METHODS Capitalizing on herbarium records from across the midwestern United States and on detailed botanical surveys documenting local extinctions over the past century, we investigated whether extirpated and extant taxa differ in their phenological responses to temperature and precipitation during winter and spring (during flowering and the growing season before flowering) or in the magnitude of their flowering time shift over the past century. RESULTS Although warmer temperatures across seasons advanced flowering, extirpated and extant species differed in the magnitude of their phenological responses to winter and spring warming. Extirpated species demonstrated inconsistent phenological responses to warmer spring temperatures, whereas extant species consistently advanced flowering in response to warmer spring temperatures. In contrast, extirpated species advanced flowering more than extant species in response to warmer winter temperatures. Greater spring precipitation tended to delay flowering for both extirpated and extant taxa. Finally, both extirpated and extant taxa delayed flowering over time. CONCLUSIONS This study highlights the importance of understanding phenological responses to seasonal warming and indicates that extirpated species may demonstrate more variable phenological responses to temperature than extant congeners, a finding consistent with the hypothesis that appropriate phenological responses may reduce species’ likelihood of extinction.

Phenological studies help determine the reproductive and vegetative patterns of plants, contributing to knowledge about dynamics in an environment. We studied the reproductive phenological patterns of five Rubiaceae species in an Atlantic Forest area, evaluating their seed dispersal syndromes and the effects of climatic variables on flowering and fruiting phenology. We monitored reproductive individuals of five species biweekly from February 2015 to February 2016 (one-year period). For each reproductive phenophase, we evaluated the Fournier index and intrapopulational synchronicity. Spearman’s rank correlation was used to determine possible correlations between phenological phenophases and rainfall, temperature and photoperiod. Seed dispersal syndromes were based on morphological analysis and Van der Pijl classification. The Rubiaceae community showed a continuous pattern of flowering and fruiting. However, when analysing phenological patterns by species, there was a higher concentration of phenophases and synchronicity of populations in the rainy season. Flowering and fruiting were positively correlated with temperature and historical average rainfall. Zoochory was the predominant seed dispersal syndrome, indicating the importance of the Rubiaceae family as a year-round resource for frugivorous communities. Temperature and rainfall regulate the reproductive phenophases similarly, resulting in a high level of synchrony between them.

O conhecimento advindo da fenologia vegetal em ecossistemas naturais promove o entendimento da biodiversidade, produtividade, organização das comunidades vegetais e sobre as interações das plantas com a fauna, sendo de grande importância em programas de conservação. Entretanto, informações fenológicas de algumas espécies são insuficientes, este é o caso de Qualea multiflora Mart. Diante do exposto, este estudo teve o objetivo de descrever a sua fenologia reprodutiva e vegetativa em fitofisionomia de Cerradão, Estado de Goiás, Brasil. Para tal, foram marcados 15 indivíduos que foram visitados mensalmente entre julho de 2016 e junho de 2018 e os eventos reprodutivos (botão floral, antese, fruto imaturo e fruto maduro) e vegetativos (broto foliar, folha jovem, folha adulta e senescência) foram registrados. A intensidade e sincronia foram avaliadas e testada a sazonalidade e correlação de Spearman da fenologia com variáveis climáticas locais. A floração ocorreu na transição do período seco para o chuvoso e durante as chuvas. A frutificação foi registrada durante todos os meses de estudo e a maturação dos frutos na época mais seca. A brotação foliar, produção de folhas e senescência ocorreram na maioria dos meses de observação, com maior intensidade em meses secos e quentes. A folhagem adulta esteve presente durante todo o estudo. Este estudo evidencia que mesmo que Q. multiflora apresente comportamento fenológico semelhante ao já encontrado na literatura para espécies arbóreas do cerradão, há algumas particularidades, principalmente no corpo vegetativo.
