Emerging Floating Photovoltaic System—Case Studies High Dam and Aswan Reservoir in Egypt

Abstract: The world has a target of achieving 100% renewable energy by the end of the century. This paper presents a case study to establish a new floating photovoltaic park (FPV) in Egyptian dams. In Egypt, two hydroelectric dams, namely High Dam and Aswan Reservoir, together produce 2.65 GW in the Upper-Egypt region. The addition of 5 MW FPV for each dam is simulated using the Helioscope software application. A comparison between the performance of the dams with and without adding the FPV is presented in terms of the … Show more

“…They also mentioned that additional hydroelectricity can be generated since the water volume is increased due to lower water evaporation while the capacity factor is increased by 20%. Ravichandran et al [25] have investigated the use of FPVs in Aswan reservoir in Egypt. The authors stated that the total power of the two existing hydropower plants in Aswan reservoir is at 2.65 GW while two FPV systems, at 5 MWp, each can be installed in the two dams.…”

“…This illustrates that, generally, the proposed inverter will achieve the grid code requirements in small-scale and medium-scale grid-tied PV systems without the need for filters. The proposed inverter is the most applicable one in many applications, including floating PV [26].…”
