Emerging blood-based biomarkers for detection of gastric cancer

Abstract: Early detection and efficient monitoring of tumor dynamics are prerequisites for reducing disease burden and mortality, and for improving the management of patients with gastric cancer (GC). Blood-based biomarker assays for the detection of early-stage GC could be of great relevance both for population-wide or risk group-based screening programs, while circulating biomarkers that reflect the genetic make-up and dynamics of the tumor would allow monitoring of treatment efficacy, predict recurrences and assess t… Show more

“…[11] We propose four functions biomarkers can perform in MF/SzS: Biomarkers used for screening purposes must be inexpensive, easily and robustly measurable using minimally invasive routine laboratory techniques, and should discriminate between malignant and benign processes. Early-stage MF may be confused with benign inflammatory conditions such as psoriasis, eczema or other dermatoses (e.g.…”

“…High cure rates are achieved for stage IA and IB gastric cancer, but the results for advanced stages IIIA and IIIB are poor, and a high percentage of patients are locally irresectable at time of diagnosis (93,94). Five-year overall survival rates in patients diagnosed with advanced or metastatic disease are not exceeding 20% (95). Multimodal treatment involving surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy have been the mainstay in the treatment of gastric cancer.…”

“…Gastric cancer is the fifth most common malignancy and the third leading cause of cancer-associated mortality worldwide (1). According to GLOBOCAN 2012, ~1 million new gastric cancer cases, with an ~72% mortality rate, were diagnosed in 2012, of which ~50% occurred in Eastern Asia (predominantly in China) (2).…”
