Emerging Advanced Technologies to Mitigate the Impact of Climate Change in Africa

Abstract: Agriculture remains critical to Africa’s socioeconomic development, employing 65% of the work force and contributing 32% of GDP (Gross Domestic Product). Low productivity, which characterises food production in many Africa countries, remains a major concern. Compounded by the effects of climate change and lack of technical expertise, recent reports suggest that the impacts of climate change on agriculture and food systems in African countries may have further-reaching consequences than previously anticipated. … Show more

“…Recurrent drought could result in yield loss of as high as 90% when it occurs from a few days before anthesis to the end of the grain-filling period [10]. Current climate change-related projections present more grim implications for agriculture in Africa, including maize production [11]. Studies have revealed that genetic enhancement of maize for drought tolerance could result in genetic gains [12,13].…”

“…Finally, cluster analysis suggested that tailored information regarding CRISPR/Cas9 should be addressed. For example, to improve attitudes toward CRISPR/Cas9-modified rice among opponents, information regarding the positive impact on cultivation that CRISPR-Cas9 technology could generate (Ribeiro & Rodriguez, 2020) should be highlighted to reduce their perceived risk associated with gene technologies. Furthermore, policy intervention to increase knowledge dissemination regarding genetic modification techniques, with an emphasis on NBTs and gene editing, could positively affect farmers' attitudes toward CRISPR/Cas9-modified rice.…”

“…Following the assessment of criteria importance, the experts constructed a grid, which is instrumental in determining the most appropriate strategy through the SF-WASPAS approach. In the initial phase, linguistic variables were translated into the SFN, employing the scale outlined in reference (Francisco Ribeiro & Camargo Rodriguez, 2020). Following this, expert opinions were combined using the SWAM operator to establish expert weights.…”
