Emergency surgery due to diaphragmatic hernia: case series and review

Abstract: BackgroundCongenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a congenital abnormality, rare in adults with a frequency of 0.17–6%. Diaphragmatic rupture is an infrequent consequence of trauma, occurring in about 5% of severe closed thoraco-abdominal injuries. “…[12] Mesh has been particularly advocated in cases of large defects or muscle weakness. [4,11] Morgagni hernias may be repaired via a thoracic or abdominal approach, but bowel obstruction mandates an abdominal approach. [1,13] Large right-sided defects are also frequently repaired with combined transthoracic and transabdominal approaches [13,14] The first laparoscopic repair of a Morgagni hernia was reported in 1992.…”

“…16 In the elderly, diaphragmatic hernias due to congenital etiology are detected with a frequency of 0.17-6%, being most often associated with acquired causes such as thoraco-abdominal injuries. 17 Asymptomatic cases are usually missed on a first clinical evaluation, and manifest only with overt signs of complications. 17 Acute respiratory failure can be the result of severe lung compression from incarcerated bowel loops or stomach.…”
