Emergency department waiting room nurses in practice: An observational study

Abstract: Therapeutic engagement allowed waiting room nurses to reassure and calm patients and families, and deliver holistic, patient-centred care. Waiting room nurses contributed to patient safety in the waiting room, by promptly commencing episodes of care in the waiting room and through close monitoring and assessment to detect patient deterioration.

“…Communication between nurses and patients is important in creating nurse–patient relationships that support good outcomes of care (Askola et al, 2018; Bone et al, 2015; Davies et al., 2017; Dearing, 2004; Haugan, 2014; Innes et al, 2018; Lotzkar & Bottorff, 2001; Morgan & Moffatt, 2008a; Morse, 1991; Moyle, 2003; Ozaras & Abaan, 2018; Williams, 2001). Seeking to know and understand the patient requires authentic engagement, where nurses are able to gain a thorough understanding of the patient's situation, concerns and requirements and to ensure patients and families are able to understand information that is relayed to them.…”

“…Nurses and other healthcare professionals demonstrating social etiquette, for example introducing self and giving some explanation of their role, ensures patients and families feel respected and are oriented to the ensuing conversation (Davies et al., 2017; Innes et al, 2018; Lotzkar & Bottorff, 2001). Providing timely information and the plan of care for patients in an emergency department waiting room meant patients were given some certainty about what was happening and had their anxiety somewhat relieved.…”

“…A key aspect of sequential mixed methods research is that data from previous phases informs subsequent phases [14]. In this project, findings from key informant interviews [5] informed data collection and analysis in the observational phase [15] which subsequently informed data collection for this phase. This paper reports findings from a web-based survey which allowed for systematic collection of data from a large sample enabling direct comparisons [16].…”
