Macrophytes play a crucial role in the functioning of lake ecosystems. Until now most macrophyte models neglected the fact that the majority of macrophyte species expand clonally during the growing season. Inclusion of a detailed description of clonal growth in models can facilitate our understanding of space occupation and patch expansion and predict future macrophyte development. "CLOMO" is an individual-based model which includes a detailed, spatially explicit description of rhizome formation and clone expansion as well as a realistic description of photosynthesis including light limitation and temperature. The model also accounts for transfers of energy or resources between different parts of the clone ("clonal integration").Although the clonal growth of macrophytes is complex and poorly known, the first model results for the macrophyte species Potamogeton perfoliatus were promising and compared well with the field data. The model can produce growth networks very similar to those found in the field. A Monte Carlo sensitivity analysis showed systematically which parameters have the largest effect on the architecture and expansion of the clones.The application of the model provided new insights into growth dynamics and patch development: (1) the model showed that a lack of branching will lead to the extinction of the clone after a certain number of years. This is due to the fact that the reproductive organs (turions) are formed at the end of a branch and even a small turion mortality will cause a reduction in surviving plant numbers; (2) the growth of rhizome axes relative to those in the previous year determines the patch density and patch expansion rate. Reversing rhizomes lead to compact patch growth whereas continuing rhizomes lead to loose aggregates.

In addition, studying phenology is the simplest procedure to track current global warming and its effects on the success and survival of different populations of the same species. Little is known about the effect of water temperature and its corresponding accumulated heat on charophytes' phenology. We compared differences in water temperature and sexual reproductive phenology of Chara hispida in two ponds of two countries located at different latitudes (Spain and Switzerland) over the same year. We estimated the accumulated heat required to develop from one phenophase to another (unripe/ripe gametangia and oospores). Curve fitting techniques on water temperature showed an advance of 26 days in the Spanish spring 2 onset. All phenological events happened for the first time around 40 days earlier in the Spanish pond, agreeing with the Hopkins' Bioclimatic Law prediction. C. hispida sexually reproduced in a daily mean temperature (DMT) range of 10-25°C and needed 600 growing degree-days (GDD) to ripen gametangia in the Spanish pond. The Swiss population required a higher DMT (15°C) to begin to reproduce, and ~700 GDD to initiate gametangia ripening. Temperature (as well as radiation) is one of the most important drivers of reproductive phenology, and accumulated heat is a better predictor than DMT for charophyte phenology. In the foreseeable warming scenario, we assume that C. hispida sexual events would advance by more than one month in Switzerland and expand at the end of the season, considerably lengthening its reproductive period.

Changes in aquatic macrophyte populations in the Burnett River in southeast Queensland, Australia are described with respect to the effects of water level fluctuations and possible impact on the Queensland lungfish (Neoceratodus forsteri). This protected fish relies on macrophyte beds as spawning and nursery areas. Studies were conducted prior to, during and following construction of a new weir on the river. Comparative results of impounded and non-impounded sites were conducted to investigate seasonal and inter-annual changes in macrophytes and the effects of both a rapid rise in water level when the impoundment first filled and a decline, on new plants in shallow water. Macrophyte communities in newly inundated areas were studied to determine the time taken for seedlings to emerge and reach a cover sufficient to represent spawning habitats for the lungfish. Vallisneria nana dominated the macrophyte beds, which were scoured from the river by a large flow event in May 1998, the effects of which persisted for at least 1 year. Most newly emerging seedlings of Vallisneria perished following a small decline of 7 cm in water level. Decrease in plant biomass and death of established plants in highly turbid water resulted within 6-9 weeks following larger water level rises of 4.0-5.5 m in the new impoundment. In the period leading up to the lungfish-spawning season at least 5 months is required for submerged plants to reach the 90% cover preferred for spawning. Implications of the results for water level management and lungfish populations are discussed.
