Emergence of NDM-1–producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa Sequence Type 773 Clone: Shift of Carbapenemase Molecular Epidemiology and Spread of 16S rRNA Methylase Genes in Korea

Abstract: Imipenemase (IMP)-6-producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa sequence type (ST) 235 is a dominant clone of carbapenemase-producing P. aeruginosa (CPPAE) in Korea. As part of the Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System in Korea, we found an increase in the carbapenem resistance rate of P. aeruginosa isolates from blood cultures and a shift in the molecular epidemiology of CPPAE. A total of 212 non-duplicated P. aeruginosa blood isolates were obtained from nine general hospitals and two nursing homes. Twenty-four i… Show more

“…Previous reports from Pakistan detected bla NDM-1 , bla IMP , bla VIM , bla OXA-48 carbapenemases in CRPA [21,71,72,85,93,94]. These findings are supported by various global reports [14,73,90,[95][96][97][98][99][100][101]. On the other hand, the detection of bla KPC among CRPA was reported infrequently in Pakistan [94]; however, an increasing trend in the global dissemination of bla KPC -harboring P. aeruginosa has been observed [22,28,[102][103][104][105][106][107][108].…”

“…A recent study conducted in Korea revealed that bla NDM-1 was among the most detected metallo-beta-lactamase genes in carbapenem-resistant P. aeruginosa isolates. This highlights the significance of bla NDM-1 in contributing to carbapenem resistance in P. aeruginosa strains [ 45 ].…”

“…The growing prevalence and global spread of the multidrug resistance profiles of MBL-producing P. aeruginosa [ 54 ] warn of the occurrence of epidemic outbreaks. Recent antimicrobial resistance surveys in South Korea have revealed an increase in the carbapenem resistance rate of P. aeruginosa isolates [ 55 ]. Given the clinical importance of MBL-producing P. aeruginosa , we used 21 clinical isolates of P. aeruginosa expressing either NDM or IMP collected from patients admitted to a university hospital in Seoul, Korea ( Table 1 ).…”
