Emergence of Competition between Different Dissipative Structures for the Same Free Energy Source

Abstract: In this paper, we explore the emergence and direct interaction of two different types of dissipative structure in a single system: self-replicating chemical spot patterns and buoyancyinduced convection rolls. A new Lattice Boltzmann Model is developed, capable of simulating fluid flow, heat transport, and thermal chemical reactions, all within a simple, efficient framework. We report on a first set of simulations using this new model, wherein the Gray-Scott reaction diffusion system is embedded within a non is… Show more

“…However it is in line with the successful way physics models systems (cf. the models of Virgo, 2011;Bartlett and Bullock, 2015) and therefore in line with our general approach. Now given a set of counterfactual histories containing living organisms we expect that the degrees of freedom which in one history pertain to a living system at time t need not pertain to a living system within another such history at t (or in fact ever).…”

“…This might suggest that the first forms of self-preserving behaviour occurred a long time after evolution began, but perhaps such a conclusion would be premature. Interestingly, a variety of abiological systems, including ramified charge-transportation networks [ 1 ], Bénard convection cells, motile oil droplets [ 2 ] and reaction/diffusion spots [ 3 , 4 ], demonstrate forms of ‘self-preservation’, i.e. they regulate their interaction with their environment in a way that prolongs their operation (discussed in detail in §1.1).…”
