Emergence of Carbapenem-Resistant Serotype K1 Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae Strains in China

Abstract: cWe report the emergence of five carbapenem-resistant K1 hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (hvKP) strains which caused fatal infections in hospital patients in Zhejiang Province, China, upon entry through surgical wounds. Genotyping results revealed the existence of three genetically related strains which exhibited a new sequence type, ST1797, and revealed that all strains harbored the magA and wcaG virulence genes and a plasmid-borne bla KPC-2 gene. These findings indicate that K1 hvKP is simultaneously hyp… Show more

“…These two isolates were characterized as K2/ST25 and K2/ST65 with blaKPC-2, respectively. The study from China revealed 5 K1 cr-hvKP isolates with plasmid-borne blaKPC-2 gene and genetic relation between 3 of them [30]. The development of resistant strains of hvKP demonstrates a need for avoiding unnecessary antibiotic use that stimulates the generation of resistant strains.…”

“…More importantly, hypervirulent carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae isolates have emerged in clinical settings (9,12,16). The confluence of multidrug resistance and enhanced virulence has the potential to be the next clinical crisis (5).…”

“…Aerobactin accounts for increased siderophore production and is a major virulence determinant and new defining trait for hvKP based on genetic background (11). Some advances have been made recently in the epidemiology of hvKP isolates in China (6,7,12), although most of the studies defined hvKP by hypermucoviscosity phenotype rather than genotype, which may have led to biased results. In the present study, hvKP strains were defined on the basis of aerobactin detection.…”

“…Before the study of Danxia et al, there have been 36 CRHvKP strains isolated in China between 2010 and 2018 [13][14][15][16][17][18]. Sequence types and genotypes of ÎČ-lactamase (bla) genes of 36 strains were summarized in Table 1.…”
