Emergence and spread of antibiotic-resistant foodborne pathogens from farm to table

Abstract: Antibiotics have been overused and misused for preventive and therapeutic purposes. Specifically, antibiotics are frequently used as growth promoters for improving productivity and performance of food-producing animals such as pigs, cattle, and poultry. The increasing use of antibiotics has been of great concern worldwide due to the emergence of antibiotic resistant bacteria. Food-producing animals are considered reservoirs for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and residual antibiotics that transfer from the … Show more

“…Owing to antibiotic overuse in the medical, fishery, and livestock and poultry breeding industry, several antibioticresistant bacteria, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), multidrug-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae (MDRSP), and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) have emerged, posing new challenges to food hygiene and safety and efficacy of medicines (Gomes et al, 2022;Kim & Ahn, 2022;Le et al, 2022). To overcome the challenges posed by the increasing emergence of drug-resistant bacteria and their strong environmental adaptability, researchers are using a combination of antibiotics to treat bacterial infections (Beardmore et al, 2017;Li et al, 2022b;Pabon et al, 2022).…”

“…These problems are exacerbated in extreme conditions [11]. The problem of the spreading of antibiotic resistance is also to some extent related to food safety [12][13][14][15][16]. However, the key issue of food safety has been and remains the fight against foodborne pathogens [17][18][19][20].…”

“…This has become a global health concern worldwide (Donado-Godoy et al ., 2015). The emergence of resistance to antibiotics in microorganisms, especially bacteria, is partially due to the existence of resistance genes (Zalewska et al ., 2021), and farm animals, such as cattle being the prime reservoirs for these genes (Kim and Ahn, 2022).…”
