EMDR and Olfactory Reference Syndrome A Case Series

Abstract: Olfactory reference syndrome (ORS) is an illness currently considered a delusional disorder under the DSM-IV criteria. Patients believe that they emit a foul odor, causing them great emotional distress and negative social consequences. “…ORS and comorbid symptoms were assessed using objective rating scales, elaborating on previous reports on behavioral therapy and EMDR in ORS. 5,[7][8][9] After CBT group treatment, ORS symptoms fully remitted and improvement was maintained for 6 months. “…Some case studies have reported (partial) response with clomipramine, 1,3,4 while others have reported nonresponse. [5][6][7] The interpretation of previous case reports on behavioral therapy and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is impeded by the paucity of objective outcome assessments. 5,[7][8][9] To date, no report on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has been published.…”

“…It is important to emphasize that memories of even ubiquitous events appear to set the foundation for a wide range of pathologies. For instance, the onset of both body dysmorphic disorder (Brown et al 1997) and olfactory reference syndrome (McGoldrick et al 2008) were reported to be childhood humiliations, and the symptoms were eliminated after one to three EMDR memory processing sessions. Although EMDR can successfully address the overt symptoms associated with a variety of clinical diagnoses, its overarching goal is to achieve an alteration of the underlying condition that is generating the dysfunctional response in the present as part of a comprehensive treatment effect.…”
