Embryo implantation

Abstract: Recent developments in analytical techniques have initiated a search for biomarkers of embryo quality and endometrial receptivity, and in-vitro studies have revealed novel roles for the decidualized endometrium as a biosensor of embryo quality.

“…Although frequently the term ‘implantation failure’ is used for women with implantation failure of at least three high-quality embryo transfers [20, 21], this study focuses on maximizing the effectiveness of ART earlier during the process, keeping in mind both patient burden and healthcare costs. In addition, Koot et al have shown that endometrial genomic profiles (EGP) show different characteristics in women with and without repeated implantation failure (RIF) [22]. The current study seeks to identify if this EGP predicts the chance of conception within 1 year of IVF treatment.…”

“…It can be considered a complex disease: first of all it is related to two different genomes (oocyte and sperm quality represent major determining factors in reproductive success), depends on endometrium receptivity and is influenced by several environmental factors (Koot and Macklon, 2013; Hart, 2016). In the same way as cancer, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, discovering a contributing factor and characterizing its involvement, is a difficult undertaking because the effect of any single factor may be obscured or confounded by other contributing factors (Manolio et al, 2009).…”

“…Implantation failure is responsible for significant pregnancy loss in the human (Koot and Macklon 2013; Koot et al 2012; Norwitz et al 2001). Understanding the mechanisms associated with the implantation process and other events during early pregnancy will significantly improve the success of assisted reproductive technologies (ART).…”
