Embolisation procedures in congenital heart disease.

Abstract: Eight therapeutic embolisation procedures were performed by the transcutaneous catheter technique in seven patients with congenital heart disease. After surgical correction of tetralogy of Fallot (four patients), catheter embolisation was used to occlude two large aortopulmonary collaterals (one patient), three small aortopulmonary collaterals (one patient), and two Blalock-Taussig shunts (two patients). In two patients congenital coronary anomalies were occluded--a coronary arteriovenous malformation and a co… Show more

“…Percutaneous closure of APCs has been described as an adjunct to surgery with the use of mechanically detachable coils (8). Few cases of elective occlusion of larger vessels with a variety of devices have also been described (9,10). Embolization procedure may involve risk of device migration, non-target embolization, lung infarction and recanalization (11).…”

“…Complications are increased in adults compared with children, due in part to the increased incidence of symptoms and cardiac dysfunction in adult patients [1]. More recently, vascular embolic devices to close coronary artery fistulae percutaneously have been used [12][13][14][15][16][17][18]. In this report, we describe the use of electrolytically detachable coils and intravascular ultrasound imaging in the percutaneous closure of a giant coronary artery fistula, neither of which has been reported previously.…”

“…Traditionally, these have been pushable, such as Gianturco or Vortex coils [12][13][14][15][16][17]. The coils can be plain, allowing for greater flexibility, or fibrin-coated, encouraging thrombus formation to obtain closure of the abnormal vascular connection (Fig.…”

“…3 ' 4 Advances in interventional catheterization have now made it possible effectively to occlude abnormal intrathoracic vessels. 8 As early as in 1982, this method was advocated for the treatment of scimitar syndrome in infancy. In this early experience embolization using Gelfoam fragments was unsuccessfully attempted in two infants but was successful in one.…”
