The main goal of this study was to review current studies on the state of the art of wood constructions with a particular focus on energy efficiency, which could serve as a valuable source of information for both industry and scholars. This review begins with an overview of the role of materials in wood buildings to improve energy performance, covering structural and insulation materials that have already been successfully used in the market for general applications over the years. Subsequently, studies of different wood building systems (i.e., wood-frame, post-and-beam, mass timber and hybrid constructions) and energy efficiency are discussed. This is followed by a brief introduction to strategies to increase the energy efficiency of constructions. Finally, remarks and future research opportunities for wood buildings are highlighted. Some general recommendations for developing more energy-efficient wood buildings are identified in the literature and discussed. There is a lack of emerging construction concepts for wood-frame and post-and-beam buildings and a lack of design codes and specifications for mass timber and hybrid buildings. From the perspective of the potential environmental benefits of these systems as a whole, and their effects on energy efficiency and embodied energy in constructions, there are barriers that need to be considered in the future.

Agrochemical based agriculture production is neither sustainable nor eco-friendly. A cost effective and sustainable organic farming is the need of time for better yield and quality. The efficient use of energy inputs improves productivity, profitability and economy. In this regard, we carried out this research for greenhouse hybrid cucumber (Kalam F1) production at Institute of Hydroponic Agriculture, Rawalpindi for the year 2017 to 2019 cropping season. The main objective was to evaluate the yield, energy and economic feasibility of greenhouse cucumber production under different farming treatments such as inorganic, organic and integrated fertilization application. The analysis was carried out based on energy use efficiency, energy productivity, benefits to cost ratio and amount of renewable and nonrenewable energies. The obtained results depicted that the total energy inputs for inorganic, organic and integrated greenhouse productions were 45856.3, 42945.3 and 54070.0 MJ ha −1 , respectively. Energy use efficiency was 4.19, 4.84 and 4.87 while the energy productivity was 1.25 kg MJ −1 , 1.26 kg MJ −1 and 1.40 kg MJ −1 under inorganic, organic and integrated fertilizer treatments, respectively. The average percentages of direct, indirect, renewable and non-renewable energies were 11%, 32.9%, 11.7% and 32.2% of the total energy, respectively. The net return of integrated farming treatment was highest (43135.60 $ ha −1) than organic (23555.33 $ ha −1) and inorganic (25127.93 $ ha −1) farming treatments. Similarly, the benefit to cost ratio were 7.75, 6.03 and 6.57, respectively from integrated to inorganic farming treatments. According to results, greenhouse cucumber production under integrated treatment showed high energy use efficiency, energy productivity, net return and benefit to cost ratio in comparison with organic and inorganic treatments which proved to be profitable practice for greenhouse cucumber production than organic and inorganic farming treatments.

Spatiotemporal Evolution of Global Greenhouse Gas Emissions Transferring via Trade: Influencing Factors and Policy Implications

Global climate change caused by greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) from anthropogenic activities have already become the focus of the world. A more systematic and comprehensive analysis on the factors influencing the changes of global GHGs transferring via trade have not been fully discussed. To this end, employing spatial econometric regression models and multi-regional input-output models, this paper reveals factors influencing the GHGs transferring via trade changes in 39 major economies, so as to develop the relevant GHGs reduction policies. The results indicate that regions with the highest net outflow of GHGs transferring via trade are primarily Russia and Canada, and the adverse effects of promoting GHGs reduction on the national economy could be avoided by these regions owing to trade relations. Additionally, factors influencing the changes in GHGs transferring via trade have significant spatial autocorrelation, and population size and energy structure exert significant spatial spillover effects on the changes in the GHGs transferring via trade. On this basis, this paper suggests that one more effective way to prevent trade from the rigorous demands of environmental governance measures while preserving the economic benefits of international trade may be to facilitate cooperation between countries on GHGs mitigation. Further, we articulate more balanced environment governance policies, including conducting the sharing of advanced energy technologies and developing clearer production technologies.
