Embodied cognition and its applications: A brief review

Abstract: Embodied cognition is a research program comprising an array of methods from diverse theoretical fields (e.g., philosophy, neuroscience, psychology, etc.) held together by the key assumption that the body functions as a constituent of the mind rather than a passive perceiver and actor serving the mind. With a longstanding tradition in continental and pragmatic philosophy and a recent explosion in theoretical and empirical research in psychology and cognitive science, the embodied cognition research program is … Show more

“…34 . Such failure argues against a straight-forward embodied cognition view, that the body functions as a constituent of high order cognitive processes 52 . Of particular relevance here is the suggestion that somatosensory and motor cortices activation constitute an integral part of thought processes 53 .…”

“…It is also now a topic of debate in psychological sciences through the lens of embodied cognition (e.g. Claxton, 2012;Leitan & Chaffey, 2014). As our understanding of how the body impacts psychological processes grows, mind/body approaches such as PRYT may provide tools that can be incorporated into psychological practice to more holistically treat clients.…”

“…Current research is increasingly recognizing the importance of mind/body connection, especially through studies on embodied cognition. Embodied cognition is the theory that the body and its experiences of the environment directly influence cognition (Leitan & Chaffey, 2014). Flack (2006) discovered that in a sample of undergraduates, facial expression and body posture significantly influenced emotional experience.…”

“…Somewhat influenced by Merleau-Ponty, as well as other strands of philosophical thinking (Leitan and Chaffey, 2014), another important area of work reevaluating the importance of the body is around the notion of "embodied cognition," which is being developed in the fields of the philosophy of the mind, cognitive science, but also artificial intelligence, neuroscience and linguistics. Traditionally reasoning was often seen as happening in a centralised way in the brain, working at an abstract level, consciously, through language, and rather removed from the processes of immediate perception.…”
