Embedded WAIS-IV Detection Strategies and Feigned Cognitive Impairment: An Investigation of Malingered ADHD

Abstract: Malingered attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may be strongly motivated on college campuses by recreational use of ADHD medications and to obtain unwarranted academic accommodations. Rather than rely on face-valid (easily faked) ADHD checklists, the study focused on the more complex Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale–Fourth edition (WAIS-IV; Wechsler, 2008). “…The reliable digit span (RDS, e.g., Babikan et al (2006)) and the standard deviation of simple reaction time (SDRT, Bodenburg, 2014;Czornik et al, 2021;Stevens et al, 2016) were used as embedded PVT. In relation to ADHD, the RDS demonstrated its strong capacity, as found in other studies, to distinguish between pre-instructed simulators and a control group (Rogers, Velsor, Donnelly 2nd & Dean, 2021). The RDS was classified as invalid if equal to or lower than 7.…”
