Elucidation of the Al/Si Ordering in Gehlenite Ca2Al2SiO7 by Combined 29Si and 27Al NMR Spectroscopy/Quantum Chemical Calculations

Abstract: We have investigated the Al/Si ordering in the pseudoisolated pairs of tetrahedral sites of the structure of crystalline gehlenite Ca 2 Al 2 SiO 7 by means of 29 Si and 27 Al NMR and firstprinciples quantum mechanical calculations. 29 Si NMR spectra of isotopically enriched samples enables the precise determination of the population of the two silicon sites Si−(OAl) 3-n (OSi) n (n = 0, 1) and hence the amount of Al−O−Al linkages. This leads to a reliable and model-free quantification of the departure from the … Show more

“…It is generally expected that substitution of one bonded silicon for one aluminum impact the isotropic chemical shift of the central silicon by an increase of about 4-5 ppm. 34 Similar increase has been reported for Si-O-B linkages, 35,36 but shown to depend on the boron speciation 33 (no change is observed for Si-O-B III in contrast to Si-O-B IV ). Because of the glass composition complexity, these data are therefore inconclusive as to possible differences in the degree of polymerization in the as-received and annealed fibers.…”

“…Unfortunately, only few studies have investigated 2 J(Al-O-Si) couplings and little is known about the relationship between the J values and the local structure (Al-O-Si angle, for instance). However, all the values reported in the literature for aluminosilicates are below 30 Hz (Hiet, 2009;Florian et al, 2012). So that, the two { 27 Al}-29 Si R-INEPT spectra shown in the present work were acquired with τ = τ′ = 15 ms and τ = τ′ = 50 ms.…”

“…The 27 Al spectrum of the pristine HNTs, Table 5 and Figure 4c, is composed by a strong resonance at 6 ppm, with side bands at high and low magnetic fields, corresponding to Al in octahedral coordination (Al[VI]); low-intense broad resonances at 69.6 and 60.0 ppm are also observed, that can be assigned to Al sites with tetrahedral coordination, that will be denoted respectively as, Al[IV]a and Al[IV]b signals. 41,42,43 Upon HNTs silylation, there are some intensity changes in the original resonance signals in 29 Si spectra, but Q 3 occur at approximately the same resonance values, whereas for Q 2 there are small peak shifts, Table 5 and Figure 4b, exemplified for HNTs_APTES.…”
