Elucidating the Immune-Related Mechanisms by Which Probiotic Strain Lactobacillus casei BL23 Displays Anti-tumoral Properties

Abstract: We have recently described antitumor properties of Lactobacillus casei BL23 strain in both a mouse allograft model of human papilloma virus (HPV)-induced cancer and dimethylhydrazine-associated colorectal cancer. However, the mechanisms underlying these beneficial effects are still unknown. Interestingly, in vitro cellular models show that this bacterium is able to stimulate the production of high levels of IL-2. Because this cytokine has well-known antitumor properties, we decided to explore its role in the a… Show more

“…It has been described that the supplementation with certain probiotics and prebiotics may reduce the production of certain uremic toxins and restore the normal microbiota [ 5 ]. For example, meta-analysis studies have concluded that CKD patients receiving supplementation with probiotic strains increased their anti-inflammatory cytokines and decreased their levels of uremic toxins [ 15 , 16 ]. Some studies reported that the administration of synbiotics, a combination of probiotics and prebiotics, is capable to decrease the progression of CKD with favorable results [ 12 ].…”

“…This activity has been linked to the increase in stimulatory cytokines that favor cytotoxicity [18]. Intranasal administration of L. casei BL23 [23] resulted in increased natural killer (NK) cell activity in mice challenged with TC-1 cells, and oral administration of Lactobacillus plantarum promoted intratumor migration of CD8 + and NK cells [24]. Consumption of probiotic bacteria has also been linked with prolonged survival of tumor-bearing mice, an effect associated with increased IL-12 production [25].…”

“…Lactobacillus casei BL23 (BL23) is a well-studied probiotic strain for which anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor effect have been described in mouse models 22 25 . Two secreted cell wall muramidases that contain a CHAP (NlpC/P60) domain have been characterized in BL23, P40 and P75, and homologs to these proteins are exclusively present in the L. casei taxon, that comprises mainly the species L. casei, L. paracasei and L. rhamnosus 26 .…”
