The angular distribution of photoelectrons emitted from water clusters has been measured by linearly polarized synchrotron radiation of 40 and 60 eV photon energy. Results are given for the three outermost valence orbitals. The emission patterns are found more isotropic than for isolated molecules. While a simple scattering model is able to explain most of the deviation from molecular behavior, some of our data also suggest an intrinsic change of the angular distribution parameter. We present high-resolution photoelectron-Auger-electron coincidence spectra of methane (CH 4 ). Since the vibrational structure in the photoelectron spectrum is resolved, the Auger spectra corresponding to different vibrational levels can be separated. The seven final states of CH 2+ 4 are either dissociative or metastable, but in any case are populated in a repulsive part of their potential-energy curve via the Auger decay. The Auger line shapes can therefore be obtained by mapping the vibrational wave functions of the core-hole state into energy space. We have implemented this connection in the data analysis. By simultaneously fitting the different Auger spectra, detailed information on the energies of the dicationic states and their repulsive potential-energy curves is derived.

Abstract:The control of polarization state in soft and hard X-ray light is of crucial interest to probe structural and symmetry properties of matter. Thanks to their Apple-II type undulators, the FERMI-Free Electron Lasers are able to provide elliptical, circular or linearly polarized light within the extreme ultraviolet and soft X-ray range. In this paper, we report the characterization of the polarization state of FERMI FEL-2 down to 5 nm. The results show a high degree of polarization of the FEL pulses, typically above 95%. The campaign of measurements was performed at the Low Density Matter beamline using an electron Time-Of-Flight based polarimeter.
